A monsterous poisonous reptile slithers from the depths of the midwest outback to wreak death and destruction on civilization. When teenagers start disappearing from lover's lane, a tough-talking sheriff and teen hot-rodder form an unlikely alliance to find the missing youths. What they discover is a mutant Gila monster large enough to destroy the whole town. Between scenes of low-budget destruction, Chace Winstead (Don Sullivan of Teenage Zombies / Monster Of Piedras Blancas fame) sings a couple of not-bad pop songs while cowboy perennials Fred Graham and Shug Fisher make memorable appearances. The Giant Gila Monster was filmed in Texas back-to-back with another Ray Kellogg/Ken Curtis production, The Killer Shrews.
Starring: Don Sullivan & Lisa Simone Directed by: Ray Kellogg Screenplay by: Jay Simms
A Persian horde is poised on the plains of Marathon, set to massacre the population of Athens. Led by the bloodthirsty dictator Darius, the invading army outnumbers the defenders six to one. Despite these insurmountable odds, Athenian champion Philippides refuses to abandon hope. Embarking on an arduous journey to Sparta, the hero tries to enlist the help of the neighboring army before taking to the battlefield to defend his people. Betrayal, cunning and bloodshed mark the final epic clash as the armies rage across the battlefield to the seas and underwater.
The Giant of Marathon (released in Europe as La Battaglia De Maratona) stars Steve Reeves, a pillar of the sword and sandal genre, as the hero Philippides. Director Jacques Tourneur's long-spanning career included such genre classics as Cat People, I Walked With a Zombie and Curse of the Demon. Italian horror legend Mario Bava is responsible for the stunning cinematography, which propels the gruesome battle scenes.
Starring: Steve Reeves Cinematography by: Mario Bava Directed by: Jacques Tourneur Screenplay by: Bruno Vailati, Ennio De Concini & Agusto Frassinetti
A bigoted Texan, Lieutenant Michael Grayson (Van Johnson), is assigned to command the U.S. 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II. Learning that the regiment is composed entirely of Japanese-American volunteers, he immediately requests a transfer. Suspicious and distrustful of his troops, the Lieutenant finds it hard to believe that "Japs" are fit to be American soldiers.
Denied his transfer, the unhappy commander and his regiment ship out to the raging battlefields of Europe. "Go For Broke" is the motto of the 442nd and the troops' daring and bravery under fire prove it to be well-deserved. Lt. Grayson's prejudices gradually turn to respect and admiration as his heroic subordinates aquit themselves with valor and a clear determination to go above and beyond the call of duty.
Taking on heavy casualties in carrying out its missions, the 442nd was one of the U.S. Army's most decorated infantry regiments during WWII. Many of the actual veterans of the celebrated fighting unit play themselves in Go For Broke. Appearing in more than 100 films during his long career, Van Johnson became one of America's top war film heroes during the 1940s and 1950s. In addition to Go For Broke, popular WWII-inspired movies include The White Cliffs of Dover (1944), Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944), Command Decision (1948), Battleground (1949), and the Oscar-nominated film, The Caine Mutiny (1954), one of his most memorable starring roles.
A monstrous prehistoric beast lurks deep within a cave. It's one of many fearsome creatures, including flying bat-men and a fire-breathing three-headed monster, that dwell in a hellish underground labyrinth. The evil tyrant King Eurystheus plans on using this demon-spawn to destroy Goliath, the immortal warrior. The King has stolen a precious gem and hidden it in the cave, hoping to lure Goliath to his doom. When Goliath escapes unharmed, Eurystheus abducts the beautiful princess and chains her up in the dragon's lair. Goliath now must confront the gigantic beast in order to save the woman he loves.
The success of Hercules (1957), with Steve Reeves, paved the way for a long succession of sword and sandal epics depicting the adventures of legendary heroes. Most, like Goliath And The Dragon (advertised as "The mightiest adventure of them all!"), were Italian imports, dubbed and re-titled for the U.S. market. American stars (such as Broderick Crawford) were often brought in to increase the box-office appeal. Stop-motion animator Jim Danforth (When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth) filmed the special effects scenes of the dragon.

The war against Japan fought on the far side of the world is vividly brought to life in this compelling series of documentaries that recount the legendary battles in Guam, Iwo Jima and New Britain and continues to the final surrender of Japan.
Appointment in Tokyo: This World War II documentary covers the American war effort in the Pacific from the fall of Bataan and the Philippines to the surrender of Japan on the deck of the U.S.S. Missouri. Covering events through the use of Army Signal Corps film footage as well as captured Japanese newsreels, the documentary presents the war with an up close feel and a realistic, though opinionated, approach. Run Time: 55 minutes
Attack in the Pacific: After a fascinating introduction to the diverse Pacific islands and their inhabitants, the documentary segues to the rise of Japanese military might from its home base all the way to Australia, including the critical turning point attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor. We see, at first hand, the methods used by the Allies, particularly the U.S., to ready counterattacks against Japan, including a harrowing island by island advance that generated a devastating body count. Run Time: 52 minutes
Attack! The Battle for New Britain: This gripping documentary chronicles the relentless and bloody 1943 Allied assault on the entrenched Japanese forces on Arawe Beach and Cape Gloucester, New Britain. Beginning with unsparing training footage of the Allies preparing for the assault, you are then presented with the three-prong Allied attack to retake the island of New Britain. Despite the heavy losses, the Allies were victorious in this pivotal battle of the South Pacific theatre in World War II. Run Time: 59 minutes
Battle of China (The): In this fascinating documentary we learn about the nation of China, its populace and the countries resolve to stop the invading forces of the Japanese during World War II. Starting with a short historical background to the country, we discover the reasons behind the Japanese desire for its conquest, and why they were confident of success. Ultimately, the events of the war in that region are chronicled, showing the Japanese forces taking control of portions of China to aid them in conquering all of Asia as well as the iron resistance of the Chinese people, who use all their ingenuity to fight Japanese aggression to the end. Run Time: 1:03
Marines at Taraw-Return to Guam: The documentary covers two of the Marine Corps' most savage battles. Tarawa was characteristic of the vicious island fighting that was the hallmark of the war in the Pacific. Fought within an area the size of the Pentagon, three days of fighting claimed almost 10,000 lives. The second part of the documentary portrays the return of the Marine Corps to their recaptured base on the island of Guam. Run Time: 40 minutes
Payoff in the Pacific: This fascinating documentary gives a firsthand view of the critical battles of World War II fought near Japanese territory, around the Central Pacific islands, especially New Guinea and Guadalcanal. It chronicles most of the major battles fought in that large ocean; from the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor to the ultimate surrender of Japan. Run Time: 1:17
To The Shores of Iwo Jima: This Academy Award-nominated documentary graphically depicts the American assault on the Japanese-held island of Iwo Jima and the massive battle that raged on that key island in the Allied advance on Japan. The five marines and one sailor who raised the American flag on Mt. Suribachi are shown. Run Time: 41 minutes
From the events that led to World War II to the fight for air supremacy in the Battle of Britain, to the immense confrontations of the battle of Russia and the African desert campaigns, you'll find it all brought to life in these magnificent documentaries.
Battle of Britain (The): Narrated by double amputee RAF fighter pilot Douglas Bader, The Battle of Britain records the courage and resolve of the British people in the face of the constant bombings by Hitler's Luftwaffe. In 1940, Britain was virtually the only European nation not to have fallen to the German war machine. At the conclusion of the film Britain's pilots are readying an air assault that will finally lead to payback for Hitler's oppression. Run Time: 53 minutes
Battle of Russia (The): In this Oscar-nominated documentary, we discover Russia's valiant resistance to the invasion throughout its history. The Russian people's strength of character was the key to their determination in prevailing against unstoppable German forces during some of the bloodiest battles of the World War II. The film is a wonderful compilation of authentic newsreel footage from both the U.S. Signal Corps and various Soviet sources. Run Time: 1:23
Battle of San Pietro (The): According to Time magazine, "San Pietro is in every respect as good a war film as any that has been made; in some respects it is the best. A record of one of the tense and bloody battles for the Liri Valley in Italy in late 1943, it is a story told chiefly in terms of the experiences of one infantry regiment -- the 143rd of the 36th Division. San Pietro's record of combat, its eye for terrain and for weather, its recognition of war as a science both wonderful and tragically inexact, is at least equal to any seen in films so far". Run Time: 38 minutes
Desert Victory: This Academy Award-winning British documentary follows the titanic conflict between the opposing forces of German General Erwin Rommel and British General Bernard Montgomery, from the defeat of the British at El Alamein to their ultimate quid pro quo victory at Tripoli. Four Allied cameramen were killed and thirteen others were wounded or captured during the filming of this documentary that also included captured German newsreel footage. Run Time: 1:11
Divide and Conquer: Utilizing visceral newsreel footage and maps, the documentary chronicles Hitler's stunning sweep across Europe. We watch as the Nazis overcome Denmark and Norway, repel the British Army, and force France into a humiliating surrender. We discover how ground-breaking Nazi military tactics and the duplicity of traitors lead to the fall of the majority of Central Europe. Run Time: 57 minutes
Great Battle of the Volga (The): This documentary depicts the Russian forces heroic battle to stop the invading German army from taking Leningrad. The Nazi battle plan, codenamed "Operation Barbarrosa", was to take the vital city in their efforts to conquer all of Russia. The documentary shows the resolve of the Russian troops as they battle against the well-organized and outfitted German forces, the rally of the Russians against impossible odds and the horrific results of this battle. Run Time: 1:06
Nazis Strike (The): This tough-minded documentary masterfully assembles newsreel footage to trace the ascent of Adolf Hitler and his ravening hunger for global domination. After forcefully wresting the German government from more moderate politicians, Hitler installs himself as dictator. Having suppressed the Jewish people in Germany, Der Fuhrer invades the Rhineland and Austria, and subsequently calls for the annexation of Czechoslovakia. In spite of assuring the world of "peace in our time," he marches on Poland, leading to the conflict that became World War II. Run Time: 43 minutes
Prelude to War: Prelude to War, the Oscar-winning documentary, shows the viewer how diplomatic and political snafus made in the wake of World War I planted the seeds of World War II. Blame is pointed squarely at the American populace, who had come to believe that the problems of the rest of the world would never affect them. While America slumbered, Japan and Germany inexorably built their armies and launched their plans for world domination. Run Time: 52 minutes
The treacherous sneak attack on Pearl Harbor was fresh on their minds...
Gung Ho! dramatically tells the story of the Second Marine Raider Battalion, the group formed six weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The battalion's purpose was to raid Japanese-held islands and claim them for the United States. Led by Colonel Thorwald, the men endure grueling combat training in preparation for their first mission: to annihilate the much larger and firmly entrenched Japanese garrison on Makin Island. Intense battle sequences highlight this exciting morale booster of a movie.

HIS BROTHER'S GHOST (1945; B&W; 47 minutes): Bandits are terrorizing border towns, killing ranchers and robbing their homes. Billy Carson has been investigating the criminals and learns of a plan to raid his friend Andy Jones' farm. Although they are prepared to take on the gang, there is a shootout and Andy is killed. With Jones out of the way, two outlaws are sent to rob his abandoned ranch during the night. When Carson catches them in the act, he is outnumbered, but after the ghost of Andy mysteriously appears, they make a run for it. Carson and Andy's "ghost" conspire to scare the bandits out of hiding in this haunting western tale. Starring Buster Crabbe, Al "Fuzzy" St. John Charles King, Karl Hackett, Archie Hall and Roy Brent. Directed by Sam Newfield. Screenplay by George Milton.
SHADOWS OF DEATH (1945; B&W; 59 minutes): A gang of crooked gunslingers disrupt a new railroad being built through the village of Red Rock. Sheriff Fuzzy Jones, who is also the town judge (and barber), sends for help from his friend and former partner Billy Carson (Buster Crabbe). Working together, Fuzzy and Carson hunt down the gang, and put the town of Red Rock on the map. Starring Buster Crabbe, Al "Fuzzy" St. John Dona Dax, Charles King, Karl Hackett and Archie Hall. Hit the Saddle (1937; B&W): Murderous rustler Rance McGowan tries to steal a wild herd of federally protected horses. Fortunately for the townsfolk, Sheriff Miller and the Three Mesquiteers keep a watchful eye over McGowan's operations - thwarting his henchmen. Rance now comes up with a new scheme to twist the law in his favor. McGowan paints a killer stallion to impersonate the lead pinto of the wild horses and create chaos that he hopes will revoke the herd's government protection. Sheriff Miller is killed by McGowan's rampaging horse and Tucson Smith is appointed as the new Sheriff. Stony Brooke divides his attentions between the beautiful cantina singer, Rita (Rita Hayworth) and proving the horse's innocence. The Mesquiteers must discover the truth to foil McGowan's evil plot.
Although there were more than two dozen films featuring the Three Mesquiteers, Hit the Saddle stands out among aficionados, due in part to the presence of young Rita Cansino - just months before signing with Columbia Pictures and changing her name to Hayworth. Additionally, the fight between the pinto and McGowan's imposter horse, was originally filmed a decade earlier for Devil Horse (1926) and has become one of the most re-used stock scenes in western films.
Call of the Mesquiteers (1938; B&W): Held at gun point, the Three Mesquiteers are forced to aid the getaway of a group of murderous train robbers. Responding to the killing and looting on the Desert Express, police pursue the criminals and their hostages. A bloody shoot-out ensues, leaving the thieves dead and the Mesquiteers in possession of the stolen bounty. With no way to prove their innocence, the three hapless heroes make a daring escape. Hunted by both the law and an angry lynch mob, the Mesquiteers must stay on the run as they fight to clear their names.
Starring: Bob Livingston, Max Terhune & Ray Corrigan Directed by: Mack V. Wright & John English
Hat Box Mystery (1947; B&W; 43 MINUTES): Private investigator Russ Ashton is called away on business, leaving his secretary Susan Hart in charge of his floundering detective agency. While he's away, Susan takes an assignment from a man who wants photographic evidence of his wife's infidelity. He gives her a hatbox that he has rigged with a "camera" inside. In reality, the hatbox contains a gun, and Susan unwittingly shoots the woman. Russ returns to find Susan in prison, and with no leads as to the culprit's identity, sets out to dig up the truth and clear her name.
Hollywood Mystery (1934; B&W; 54 MINUTES): Fists and bullets fly when a dangerous scheme hatched by cocky Dan Ryan, a fast-talking Hollywood PR man, runs afoul of the mob. In an desparate effort to jump-start production of Supreme Pictures' latest gangster film, The Racketeer, Ryan convinces director Sigfried Sonoff to cast an actual mobster in the lead role. He plans to fool Sonoff by hiring an unknown actor to pose as a real gangster. Ryan's job gets complicated when the actor mistakenly punches out true-life mob boss Joe Romano. When revenge-driven Romano takes the star and the leading lady hostage, the make-believe world of The Racketeer suddenly becomes all too real.
Tough talking, quick-fisted Secret Service agent Jack Holt infiltrates a gang of counterfeiters who are flooding the market with undetectable phony bills. A shadowy criminal syndicate has kidnapped one of the government's best engravers to print the bogus currency, and Holt has been called up to destroy the operation from the inside. Posing as a dangerous criminal, Jack gains entrance to the gang's remote mountain hideout, bringing fellow agent Kay Drew along. Operating among the enemy, Holt and Drew struggle to keep their true identities from being revealed through fifteen exciting chapters.
Rugged leading man Jack Holt garnered early career success in a series of Zane Grey westerns. A top draw during the silent film era, Holt made an easy transition when talkies arrived, but stayed in familiar territory, acting mainly in B westerns and adventure yarns.
Starring: Jack Holt & Tristram Coffin Directed by: James W. Horne

Horror Maniacs, also known as The Greed Of William Hart, was originally filmed under the title (The Crimes Of) Burke And Hare. The threat of a lawsuit by the ancestors of the notorious grave-robber William Hare forced producers to redub the soundtrack and substitute new character names. The expense of this effort was a major strain for the low-budget production and resulted in the elimination of a music soundtrack. The film was one of the last notable movies to star the deliriously hammy Tod Slaughter, an actor whose maniacal performances peaked in such macabre melodramas as Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street and Murder In The Red Barn. Though his fame in the U.S. horror film genre was eclipsed by actors such as Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, Slaughter was well known in his native Britain as a master of menace. In Horror Maniacs, Slaughter stars alongside his real-life wife Jenny Lynn (playing the role of Helen Moore). The scriptwriter and assistant director of Horror Maniacs, John Gilling, filmed the same story ten years later as Flesh And The Fiends with Peter Cushing and Donald Pleasance.
